I'm looking for BASIC information on submitting a patent in the USA? - submitting a patent

I "invented" a small device that I am for friends and family for a number of years. This is a great scientific discovery through, and it is unlikely for me to retire with the product. However, many people advised me to patent the idea, just in case. I'm looking for some basic information on how you can find the current patent system and how do I make a new patent.
